Bacteriostatic Water — the reconstitution diluent

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol — a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth so a vial can be drawn from more than once. It is the standard solvent used to reconstitute lyophilized research peptides. Supplied in a sealed 10 mL vial.

Why “bacteriostatic”?

Plain sterile water for injection is single-use — once opened it must be discarded. The 0.9% benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water suppresses bacterial growth, so a single vial can be drawn from repeatedly over multiple days. That makes it the practical choice for reconstituting a peptide vial that will be sampled more than once.

Reconstitution Basics

How researchers reconstitute a lyophilized peptide

General laboratory procedure for dissolving a lyophilized research peptide with bacteriostatic water. For in-vitro research use only.

Step 1Wipe both vial stoppers (peptide + diluent) with an alcohol swab and let dry.
Step 2Draw the desired volume of bacteriostatic water into a sterile syringe.
Step 3Inject the water slowly down the inner wall of the peptide vial — not directly onto the powder.
Step 4Let it dissolve on its own, or swirl gently. Do not shake — agitation can damage the peptide.
Step 5Store the reconstituted vial refrigerated (2–8°C) and use within its documented stability window.

Tip: A peptide-reconstitution calculator (see our Calculator Hub) helps determine how much bacteriostatic water to add for a target concentration.
